I believe that music is very helpful and influential, but in some extreme cases, it can have a negative effect on young people. For kids that have a good self-image and good morals, music probably has no negative effects on their life. Young people who are just developing a self-image or who are still growing up may be negatively affected by music. Young people that listen to music with lyrics that pertain to violence, racism, or include any other form of discrimination may be subject to those behaviors or thoughts. Young people that are depressed or hostile towards others might be badly influenced by the depressing or hostile music that they listen to.
Lyrics are an essential part of music and the way that it impacts our lives. Lyrics contain messages and feelings that the artists want to convey to the listeners. If violence and anger are a part of the lyrics that you listen to, then your attitude may become violent and angry. The language music uses and the moral it portrays is reflected on the listeners. For example, if you listen to songs like Marilyn Manson’s “Get your Gunn,” you will hear lyrics like, “I throw a little fit, I slit my teenage wrist, The most that I can learn,
Is in records that you burn, Get your gunn, get your gunn.” That is definitely not music that will influence me positively. If lyrics like that get stuck in your head, then you are constantly thinking about slitting your wrists and getting a gun. Those are not positive thoughts to have, especially when you are young and do not have a lot of self control. Negative influences of music mostly have to do with the lyrics that it comes with.

Another negative effect music can have on youth is if they are listening to it and blocking out everything else around them. In class, young people can learn a lot of essential things that will aid in their futures, but if they have headphones in the whole time, then all they are not expanding their education. Bad grades in school could be because the youth are not paying attention in class, only to what is coming out of their headphones. Also, if the youth believe that the music they listen to is more important that listening to their peers and/or parents, then they may not get the good advice that they might need. Their behavior will directly affect the music they listen too.
To sum it up, the music the youth listens to can negatively affect them in rare cases. Lyrics are the most important aspect of music and they are the means by which our attitude/behavior reflects. Listening to too much music can be deterring in our education. If we listen to lyrics with violent words in them, it can lead to violent behaviors. Especially if the song is stuck in our head all day, then the constantly negative words are going through our brains and play out in our actions.
Hi I agree with what you are saying to an extent. I understand that lryics are a major contributing factor in music today.
ReplyDeleteMy thought starts to leave yours when we get into the music made me do it, defense.
I am a firm believer that we control ourselves in every aspect of our lives. Everyday we are faced with bad influences. It starts on the T.V,and then moves it's way through every other part of our lives. We as humans with functioning brains make the decisions everyday to either be swayed or to stand tight next to our belifes.
I truly feel that people young or old who are willing to put the blame for their actions or lack there of on someone or something else, have no real integrity, and I could never own any real respect for them.
Lets face if little Timmy from down the street were to go to the trailor park and rape someone, can we blame M&M. Would it be his fault that Little Timmy did this because of the infleunce the song " Two Trailor Park Hoes come from round the outside?"
I don't think so. At the end of the day little Timmy has to live with the fact that he did this, no one else but him.
I am a god fearing woman, who believes that we make the bed we sleep in. At what piont will society stand up and make people take acountablity?
I really liked the views that you brought up in your blog. I think you did a really good job in bring in relevant points that where thoroughly backed up. I defiantly agree with you when you said that the lyrics of a song are the most influential to an individual; like you said hearing negative and provocative lyrics could give someone the wrong impression about life. I also like how you stated that for the most part students receive bad grades because they do not pay attention that they are too busy listening to music and therefore cannot broaden their knowledge and miss out of some much.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I do not agree with that fact that the majority of the bad behavior from children come from listen to negative music and I do not feel that it is a reasonable excuse for bad behavior. I feel that we are the ones who control what we do and how we react to our surroundings. Yes we may be tempted by the negative music that we listen to but in the end it is us who do what we do and nothing else. I just feel that it is kind of a poor excuse for not being responsible just an easy way out blaming something else besides themselves.
I would agree with you regarding negativity in music having an influence on someone's actions. While the music doesn't "make" a person do anything, it can be a big enough influence on someone to alter their mentality into thinking that a certain lifestyle, behavior, or mood is appropriate.
ReplyDeleteNot all bad behavior is due to negative music, obviously, but I agree that it is a practical factor. I, for one, went through a time in my life where I began to listen to music that was primarily made up of bad language. Due to the fact that I was listening to it constantly, my language absorbed the profanity. It became so natural for me to use the language because I was hearing it on a daily basis. The music had desensitized me. I was so numb to hearing the profanity that it was just like hearing any other word.
I think that music that would promote drugs and a poor lifestyle is detrimental to one's education and you are absolutely right in saying that education can be affected. Now, it's not necessarily the music's "fault", but it definitely is not a positive influence. However, I think this is on the parent's shoulders, as well as the student's. It is the responsibility of the parent to be teaching good education habits and raising a child right to know the difference between being a listener or applying the song's lifestyle.
