The Appeal of Reality Television

Many people these days are obsessed with reality television-and there are reality shows about everything you can think of. Wives-housewives, basketball wives, sister wives, (and many more)-singers, dancers, bachelors and bachelorettes.  Reality TV appeals to many people because people are interested in the lives of others, people love to gossip, people love to see happy endings and sad endings,  seeing people being challenged and pushed to their limit. There are many different reasons that we are attracted to reality TV. I am interested in reality TV programs such as Survivor, The Bachelor & Bachelorette, and American Idol.
Survivor is the ultimate of wit and skill. I watch the show Survivor because I like to see the survivors participate in physical challenges and see them interact socially with each other. I like to watch relationships grow throughout the season, and see who the “jury” believes to deserve the 1 million dollar prize.  Survivor is currently airing their 22nd season. I believe millions of viewers tune into Survivor each week because it is a reality show that actually focuses on skill rather than shows like Jersey Shore, which revolves around a group of people who live in a house together and party all the time (I absolutely do not get the attraction of that show). The survivors have to play the perfect social, physical, and mental game to make it to the end of the show and have a chance at the million dollar prize. Survivor fans are interested in watching the sneakiness of the game, and also the loyalty aspect of the game.
I also enjoy the reality television show, American Idol. American Idol singing competition whose goal is to find THE American Idol, the last one standing. American Idol attracts many people because America gets to participate in the show, and they get to vote for their favorites, and ultimately decide the winner. I like watching American Idol because I enjoy judging the talents of young singers and watching their potential continue growing throughout the season. You get to experience the contestants lives change throughout the show, and also you get to experience them growing as performers and singers. American Idol is appeals to a wide range of people because there are contestants of all ages, and talent of all varieties. American Idols can give aspiring singers hope and challenge them to continue to live their dreams. The winner of the show is granted a record deal, and their dream of becoming a superstar is fulfilled.
The Bachelor and The Bachelorette is a show that tries to set up the Bachelor or Bachelorette with their soul mate. It is show that is based on love and trying to find your perfect match. This show attracted me because I like seeing happy endings and witnessing others being in love. I do think that this show is highly destined to not fulfill its goal. Only like 3 of the Bachelor or Bachelorettes (out of 18) that are still together. I think that I just watch this show for entertainment purposes and to see if the couples can break the chain, and still be together in the end. I think that these shows appeal to many because of the drama that goes along with the show, and the hope for a happy ending.

  1. I agree with you on why people like to watch reality TV shows. Sometimes it helps to watch others go through some tough times to see that your life is not so bad. Some just find the entertainment funny to see others go through certain moments in their lives.I have no actually watched survivor but I have heard that it is a very popular reality TV show. American Idol, I am a fan of. My favorite part is the beginning when so many people are trying out and you get to see everything from good raw talent to zero talent at all. The difficult part is watching someone with great talent be sent home. So many reality TV shows are great because it is true people going through real events in life that many go through. One of the shows I enjoy now is "16 and Pregnant." Some think it encourages teen pregnancy but I know that it is to show young teens the obstacles that teens go through with getting pregnant so early. I think that more teens are now more cautious and careful through this show and seeing first hand how hard it truly is to get through school and parenting. I think this show will be around for a long time even though it is pretty new because people love to see real events and real people go through them.

  2. I did my blog on reality tv too because i watch so much of it. I can say that I have fallen victim to the tube thanks to reality shows. It's funny that you mention that there are now shows about everything. Hair salons, cakes, matchmaking, housewives, you name it, it exists. Although I used to watch American Idol every week, the past couple of seasons have NOT been good. I watch the auditions in the beginning of the season, but after that it's completely dull. I think the new show the Voice is gonna put American Idol out of business, for sure. Rating have continuously dropped and not even J.Lo and Steven Tyler could bring it back to number 1. Survivor is a pretty cut throat show and is a reality television pioneer. I agree with you in that the jury is the best part and when their torch gets put out it adds dramatic effect. The bachelor, I have never and don’t ever want to watch. I have seen an episode or two and it just makes me want to gag. What’s wrong with these people that they are putting themselves on national television to compete for the “love” of the bachelor/bachelorette? Half the time, the person that is chosen by the bachelor/bachelorette isn’t even the “one”, and they end up breaking it off just as fast as they came together.

  3. When you see the reality TV shows don’t believe what you see is the reality, there are lot of markups done to attract our attention, which doesn’t depict our reality. Of course I am not saying every one of them is like that but for the most part I don’t believe them. They are a drama made to deceive our mind. Imagine yourself and be part of “bachelor” or “bachelorette” caste will you do the things you see on that show. If you say yes that is our reality, but for the most part it is not. The producers’ use so many stories which are hardly to be seen in reality, by then make us deceived to believe. I agree about “American Idol” the show has paved open doors for those youngsters who are striving to show up to the public. When we cast our votes we even consider their stories, which make us to lean to our favorites. This sometimes shows we have some kind of common feeling and wish we see in the contestants. I guess what we have to classify is which ones are showing our reality and which ones are not. For instance Jersey Shore, the Kardashians show, “bachelor” or “bachelorette” for the most part doesn’t show our reality. Check it yourself by putting yourself in their experience. This does make sense?

  4. This seems to be a popular subject for our blogs this week and I agree with you as to the appeal of the shows. Most of us would like to see happy endings, we enjoy the gossip and especially the drama and the challenges the “stars” of these shows face. I watched Survivor for its first few seasons and then got bored watching it. It was presented more dramatically than what I perceived the “reality” to be. The closing ceremonies where the contestants were voted off the island and had to turn in their torch were just silly to me. I agree with you on Jersey Shore, what is the attraction of watching these dumb people drinking, partying and talking about or having sex? I think they make themselves look really stupid and shallow. I know people who watch it and even tape it because they don’t want to miss an episode! I’ve also watched American Idol on and off over the years, but usually just the beginning tryouts and the endings. I find I don’t have the patience to watch all the shows in between those two points. Simon would really bug me, Paula was too sweet, but I loved Randy. He’s the only judge that seemed somewhat real. I wrote about the Bachelor and Bachelorette shows for my blog. Again, you made a good point about the appeal of these two shows that I didn’t think of – people like to see happy endings. It’s like watching a fairy tale!
